Cakes and Bakes!

I made this cake for my niece's 1st birthday. I know, I know, she's too young to really appreciate it but still, it was a large event with like 30 guests. The best part of this cake is that it is entirely edible. Even Elmo's head can be eaten. I wish I had taken pictures of the process but I didn't. I will next time.

The cake is a 6 layer vanilla cake with buttercream and fondant icing. Elmo's head is made out of rice krispy treats (thank you Cake Boss) coover in fondant icing and the fur is buttercream icing with tons of red gel colouring.

This year, I will do something a little more basic (upon the request of my dear sister - who had to contend with the leftover cake). I'll be sure to document the process this time and hopefully I can help all my fellow bakers out there with tips and ideas!

Happy Baking!

Birthday #2

In accordance with my previous post, this year’s cake was not as extravangant as last year’s. My sister insisted that this year’s cake be a basic Ariel (shaped -cake-pan) cake because, although she’s only two, my niece loves the happy-go-lucky mermaid. All of my efforts to convince my sister that my niece needed an even bigger cake than last year’s failed miserably and so I was left to bake a simple, boring, cake. Or so I thought.

With a little help from Wilton online I created something that was just so adorable. Ariel was in for a beach party! The cake itself was red velvet because some people didn’t like chocolate and others hated vanilla (I know, what’s wrong with these people?) with cream-cheese icing. Of course, I followed the pan mould instructions on how to pipe-out Ariel’s face, hair, and all the details, but the fun of the project came after the basic decoration. I bought a sea-shell mould and made some chocolates with a mix of coloured candy melts, iced the cake board in blue icing, and added some brown sugar for a beach look.

This is what it looked like in the end...
Sure, Ariel wears a heavy layer of eye-liner, but it's a party so it's OK!!!
